AGU endorses the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Reauthorization Act of 2023
Posted by Caitlin Bergstrom
On 8 November 2023, AGU sent a letter of endorsement to the House Science committee on the Weather Research and Forecasting Innovation Reauthorization Act of 2023.
We praise the bill’s goal of building on the achievements of the original Weather Act, which led to numerous advances in weather forecasting and predictions of high-impact weather events. As our communities become increasingly affected by severe weather-related impacts, from wildfires to flooding to extreme storms and drought, it’s even more imperative that the nation’s weather forecasting capabilities remain cutting-edge and that every region and state has access to the most reliable weather data and tools. However, while the provisions of this bill aim to do this and more, we are concerned that proposed cuts to programmatic funding may undermine those efforts.
As an organization dedicated to ensuring that science is not only usable but used, AGU appreciates your leadership in ensuring the nation is positioned to address emerging and occurring weather and climate impacts. We look forward to working with you as this bill advances.
