Faced with decimation of federal science, our community stands up for science like never before
Posted by Caitlin Bergstrom
“I came today to put a face to science and what these cuts mean, and I also wanted to change the script from being called a ‘fraudster’ to being called a patriot. I believe that scientists serve their country using the skills that they have.” –Dr Jennifer Morash, June 2025 Days of Action participant
Scientists serve communities through deeper understanding of our world, leading to improvements in our health, environment, safety, and more. Recent Administration policies are threatening scientists’ ability to do this work in the U.S., but scientists aren’t taking these threats lying down. They are ready to stand up for science and show the value that their research has to society, even when it takes a slightly different focus and skillset than what they learned in graduate school.
“Anybody who is scientifically literate and has scientific ways of thinking is in a really good position to challenge people in power and to participate fully in democracy.” –Dr Tim Watkins, June 2025 Days of Action participant
And scientists are being heard. AGU is working to help support them through AGU Days of Action, a series of events and opportunities showing strong support for sustained investment in Earth and space sciences and highlighting the dangers of cutting research funding and weakening the U.S. federal workforce.
Recent AGU Days of Action events and outcomes:
- 9 April: AGU hosted AGU Days of Action: Supporting Science at the National Level (Passcode: Dqp.JY8&) that drew 115 attendees and 233 RSVPs, providing resources and assistance for scientists to meet with their Members of Congress in their home districts in April.
- 14-25 April: Scientists requested over 100 meetings with Members of Congress and made 135 phone calls to offices in support of science during the April congressional recess.
- 3-4 June: AGU hosted 97 scientists from 30 states who conducted 127 congressional meetings in Washington, DC. Many congressional offices were very supportive, such as Senator Mark Kelly (AZ-D), who will share the story of one constituent scientist on the Senate floor.
- All June: An additional 119 people made 82 phone calls and sent 354 emails to their Members of Congress for AGU Days of Action through the AGU Science Policy Action Center.
- 24 June: AGU hosted AGU Days of Action: Supporting Science in Your District During August Recess (Passcode kH4a5.2X). 101 scientists RSVP’d for the webinar to learn how to meet with legislators in their home districts during the August congressional recess.
“We are here […] asking for the support of science funding, because there is a lot at risk.” – Dr Mickey Rogers, June 2025 Days of Action participant
Join your colleagues and stand up for science during this critical time.
There are many ways you can still be part of AGU Days of Action:
- Email your legislators requesting a local meeting in August (and bring a friend!)
- Watch a webinar recording to get more information on requesting meetings and in-district visits (Passcode kH4a5.2X)
- Watch a webinar recording to learn how to write and place op-eds to demonstrate the value of science (Passcode Zug4s^Mc)
- Sign up for AGU’s Science Policy Action Center emails to stay informed when science policy opportunities arise
