AGU Endorses the Protect America’s Workforce Act

Posted by Caitlin Bergstrom

On 30 October 2025, AGU sent letters to Congress to share our endorsement of the Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R.2550/S2837).

On behalf of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and our global community of more than half a million Earth and space scientists and allies, I write to thank you for crafting and introducing S.2837/H.R.2550, the Protect America’s Workforce Act, and to offer AGU’s support for this important bill.

President Trump’s Executive Order 14251 ending collective bargaining agreements between federal labor unions representing workers for federal agencies, including NOAA, NASA, NSF, DOE, and EPA, directly impacts the rights of workers serving in a wide range of essential public services. These include providing reliable forecasting of severe weather, protecting and promoting American innovation, studying the Earth and universe, conducting cutting-edge research to advance technology, and supporting STEM education for students across the country, among many others.

Unions that support federal workers help guarantee that government services are delivered fairly and efficiently. The patriotic and dedicated workers that are targeted by this action account for 67% of the federal workforce. The services they provide are critical to ensuring the safety of American communities and advancing our economic and innovative prosperity. As an organization committed to ensuring integrity in science and collaboration across government and research communities, AGU supports the efforts to allow federal partners to continue to carry out services necessary to society.

Thank you for your continued leadership on this vital issue. AGU looks forward to working with you to advance this legislation and ensure a strong and resilient federal workforce.
