AGU Endorses Tsunami Warning, Education, and Research Act of 2025

On 30 October 2025, AGU sent a letter to Representative Susan Bonamici endorsing the Tsunami Warning, Education, and Research Act of 2025.

On behalf of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and our worldwide Earth and space science community, I am writing to thank you for reintroducing H.R.4073, the Tsunami Warning, Education, and Research Act of 2025 and to offer AGU’s continued support for this important bill.

Tsunamis and other inundation events can cause devastating impacts on coastal communities, placing lives and property at risk. We commend the bill’s goal of enhancing the nation’s tsunami science and technology capabilities, with a specific emphasis on improving the timeliness of tsunami warnings and forecasts, as well as elevating the quality, accessibility, and management of related data.

AGU also supports the inclusion of a long-overdue evaluation of tsunami warning alert systems, which are currently often unclear and fail to provide the critical information communities need to make evacuation decisions. Assessing the system with a focus on improving technologies and messaging will help save more lives.

For years, limited coordination among federal tsunami research funders has led to inconsistent or redundant research outcomes. AGU applauds the bill’s commitment to ensuring high-quality research and development, and the inclusion of research-to-operations plans.

As an organization dedicated to ensuring that science is of the highest quality and usability, AGU appreciates your continued leadership in ensuring the nation’s tsunami programming and activities translate into the protection of lives and property. We look forward to working with you as this bill advances.
