AGU Endorses the Keep STEM Talent Act of 2025
Posted by Caitlin Bergstrom
On 30 October 2025, AGU sent a letter to leadership in Congress endorsing the Keep STEM Talent Act.
On behalf of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and our worldwide Earth and space science community, I write to thank you for reintroducing S.1233/H.R.2627, the Keep STEM Talent Act of 2025 and to offer AGU’s support for this important bill.
Maintaining a strong STEM workforce is vital to strengthening the nation’s economic viability, creating a thriving workforce, and advancing global leadership. International students play an essential role in sustaining U.S. leadership in research and innovation. Last year, about half of U.S. graduate students in critical STEM fields, including artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor-related programs, were born abroad.
Yet many international students face challenges in securing documentation if they seek to legally remain in the U.S upon completion of their degree programs, leading to the loss of top talent to other nations. The Keep Stem Talent Act of 2025 will remove barriers related to student visa and green card restriction and thus help students remain i the U.S. after graduation.
AGU supports your efforts to streamline the process for international students earning advanced STEM degrees to obtain permanent residency. Thank you for your continued leadership on this important issue. AGU looks forward to working with you to advance this legislation and strengthen the nation’s scientific workforce.
